This Event: Wed 02/06 Swagat, Palo Alto Coming Events: Wed 02/13 Man Bo Duck, Mt View Wed 02/20 ...uh-oh! KW needs a new scheduler! Kabuki web page at http://remarque.org/kabuki. Time: Please arrive at 7:30pm; we generally order around 7:45pm. Arrivals after 8pm may need to find their own table. Place: Swagat 2700 W. El Camino Palo Alto 650-948-7727 Menu: http://www.waitersonwheels.com/tpl/menu2.tpl?RestId=PA%3AR022 Description: Russell's favorite Indian restaurant. Need I say more? Well, okay. Entrees in the $6-$8 range. Vegetarian friendly. The last time Kabuki was there we had the back dining room to ourselves (this was good, we were exceptionally loud). They have a good track record for spicing up or down to taste. Also really yummy Kulcha. Entrees are rather more, and can be mild if you request it strongly. Dosas are a) yummy and b) a good value meal, especially for the veggie folks. Upscale Indian, nice lunch buffet weekdays. Great chicken makhani (butter chicken), exceptional bengan bartha (eggplant puree). BTW, if you are an art admirer, check out the amazing art on the back wall of the restroom corridor, leading into the lounge area-- a complex textured pattern made of individual metal nails of various types (steel, alumnimum, copper). Apparently the artist traded room and board for a few weeks one summer (long ago) to do that and other metalwork decorations scattered around the restaurant. [Review by RichardT circa 1995, updated by SRC 2001] Kabuki was last at Swagat on June 6, 2001. Directions: Curt: Swagat is on El Camino one block north of San Antonio in Palo Alto. Short: Take 101 to Palo Alto. Take the San Antonio road exit. Go west to El Camino. Turn right, travel one block. Swagat is on your right, adjoining a motel. If you hit the Thai Bowling Alley, you've gone too far. Longer: Swagat is south of the Dumbarton Bridge (84) and north of 237. There is no sane (IE, I can explain it in one page or less) way to reach the restaurant from 280. Well, maybe its not that bad, but still. It can also be reached from Central/Alma instead of 101, but if you know the area that well, you don't need directions. From 280: Take 280 to El Monte, and head east (away from De Anza College). The 2nd or 3rd set of lights is Foothill Expressway. Take a left onto Foothill and keep a sharp eye out for a few intersections until you can turn right onto San Antonio Road. Stay on San Antonio Rd past downtown Los Altos, past Armadillo Willys, and turn left on El Camino (immediately past AW's); get over to right hand lane, because Swagat is coming right up in the first block, just past the big carwash. If you're coming on 280 from north/west of Los Altos, get off at Page Mill Rd instead, and turn right onto Foothill, follow 'til you can turn onto San Antonio. I don't recall if the SA/Fthl intersection is a left turn w/turnout light or a freeway style loopover on the right, sorry. _SRC Transit: The 22 bus stops in front of the restaurant, and runs the length of El Camino, from somewhere in east san jose (I've been there once when I'd overslept on the bus) to Menlo Park. Buses are once every thirty minutes, which is (sigh) frequent by South Bay standards. Ah, suburban hell, gotta love it... [Directions by RichardT, modified by SRC]
