Description:

The Mountain House isn't very noticeable from the road, save a small
sign. However, this restaurant distinguishes itself the moment you step
inside. If you do not marvel at the contrast of the warm atmosphere
inside and the breathtaking redwood surroundings, you don't have a
pulse.

First, some advice: save room for dessert. Between cobblers, cheese
cake, and chocolate mousse, that's deceptively difficult at such a fine
restaurant.

This restaurant features classic continental cuisine with superior
service to match. The regular menu features a seasoned selection of
appetizers that include a tasty ceviche as well as popcorn shrimp in a
tangy dipping sauce. They feature specials for soups and salads, as
well as a very nice daily fish selection.

The main courses on the menu, however, are all well tested and tasted,
from the steak to venison. There is always at least one vegetarian meal
available, and they are generally pretty accommodating to most diets. =

Having stated that, they once refused to cook a steak to order, claiming
that the chef knew better- the person who ordered the steak agreed in
the end.

Be sure to enjoy one of their well picked selections of wine, and plan
on making a late evening of the affair, for that's what going to The
Mountain House is- an affair.

Service is everything you come to expect of a high quality continental
restaurant: both attentive and responsive. The staff has changed little
since my first trip up the hill in 1988. The combination means that
they make a point of remembering their customers and their likes and
dislikes.

An entr=E9e tends to run about $16-$25. I don't get out of there for
under $40. It's a treat, and I view it as such.

Finally, access to The Mountain House is either from the south via 84 or
the north via 92. Both ways are windy roads, and extra care should be
given, especially during deer season.

Kabuki last attended the mountain house on december 9th.
