Place: Banjara 407 Town and Country Sunnyvale, CA 94086 408-737-9151 http://www.banjarainc.com/ Description: Banjara is my favorite lunch buffet place, but they do great dinners as well. I would characterize their decor as two notches below Swagat, and their food two notches above. Big screens showing Indian TV and movies add to the lunchtime ambiance; I'm not sure if they are going for dinnertime as well. They are kept on low audio, in any case, and the acoustics there are pretty friendly for conversation. There is a wide selection of vegetarian offerings. Banjara has dosas, yum! For fellow gluten-impaired diners, check out the idli, papadum, and dosas, all made with rice, chickpea, or bean flours. Chicken #65 or Chili Chicken will delight the firemouths, and for those kinder gentler souls among us, I recommend Chicken Makhani or any of the Saag (spinach)-- lamb, paneer cheese cubes, or plain. If you're really spice-averse, like myself, ask for it mild. The Chicken Makhani or Aloo Gobi (veggie) is mild by default. If you guess wrong, try a mango lassi. Mmmmm. :-) Entrees run roughly $8 for vegetarian, $9-10 for meat. Thali dinners, with a smattering of many things, tend to add $2-3 to that. A wide variety of appetizers will probably make the average bill, with tax and tip, close to or just over $20. Kabuki West was last at Banjara on February 8th, 2001. [review by SRC] Directions: Short: Banjara is on the Matildha side of the Town and Country shopping center on the corner of Washington and Mathilda. It's across the road and down from Chevy's. You probably can't see it from Mathilda because of all the construction in the front part of the mall-- it's right behind all that plywood fencing! Transit [http://www.transitinfo.org/]: Banjara is a couple blocks away from the Sunnyvale Caltrain station. ]From the station, cross the street and go into the Town & Country complex, towards Mathilda. Go forward until you hit a huge plywood wall that encloses what used to be the front parking lot along Mathilda. Banjara is in the building along the front. Long: Take 101 to Mathilda. Head west on Mathilda into downtown Sunnyvale, crossing both Central Expressway and the JPB Peninsula Corridor rail line. After going over the railroad, turn left. Go one block south and park. You may wish to park in the parking structure of the mall next to Chevy's and just walk over, since the majority of parking in front is in the process of turning into an office building.
