Blue Nile

in Berkeley

Place
Blue Nile
2525 Telegraph Ave.
Berkeley

Description
The Blue Nile is an Ethiopian restaurant that Kabuki-West has been to a very few times, over a long period of time. It has never been too popular, I think due to the exotic nature of Ethiopian food, but I like it. I know that some of you do as well.

Ethiopian food is often served communal-style. The method of eating is a bit out of the ordinary: the single utensil that each diner has is a piece of spongy bread. You use the bread to scoop up the food, then eat the food and the bread together. The bread is damp, light, and a bit salty... definitely not much like anything else.

The pricing is medium; I think that the average person can get out without losing much more than $15, assuming moderation in drinking and appetizer-ordering habits. review by marke

Directions

Short
The Blue Nile is on the E side of Telegraph Ave., just S of Dwight Way, between Dwight Way and Parker St.

BART
(+walking about 10 blocks):
Get off at the (Central) Berkeley station. Go up the escalator; turn left. You will now be facing S, on the W side of Shattuck Ave. Follow Shattuck S to Dwight Way, then take a left. You are now walking E on Dwight Way. Walk past the light above Shattuck Ave; the next light is Telegraph Ave. Cross Telegraph, and take a right down it (so you are now traveling S on the E side of Telegraph). The Blue Nile will shortly be on your left.

Bus (from Central Berkeley BART station):
Go up the escalator at Berkeley BART, taking a left at the top. You are now facing S on the W side of Shattuck Ave. Walk to the S end of the block you are on. Wait at the bus stop you will find there for the #40 bus.

The #40 will take you to Telegraph Avenue. Get off just *before* Uncle Ralph's [which will be on the left side of the bus]. The bus (when you got off it) was facing S on the W side of Telegraph Ave. Cross Telegraph Ave., and turn left. You are now facing N on the E side of Telegraph Ave. The Blue Nile will be on your right within the next two blocks, before Dwight Way.

Long
Take the University Ave. exit off I80. Go E on University Ave. At the first light (6th St.) take a right. Follow 6th St. S, around a left and a right bend, then take a shallow left at the light onto Dwight Way. Be careful here; the rights of way are not obvious.

Follow Dwight Way E, passing the lights for San Pablo Ave, Sacramento St., MLK Way, the stop sign at Milvia, and the lights for Shattuck Ave. and whatever the street is a couple of blocks above Shattuck. The next light is Telegraph Ave.; take a right into the chute just before the light, and look for parking. The Blue Nile is on the left side of the street, between Dwight Way and Parker St.
