I can never make meetings since i work @ peoples monday nights, but i have some need of volunteer help at my new job: the Home Orchard Society just hired me as their site manager of their 1.7 acre demonstration orchard on the campus of clackamas community college in oregon city. i work 9-5ish every tuesday and saturday, and totally need volunteers to help. it is a great opportunity to get to know a lot about orchard cycles, pests and diseases, fertility, pruning and grafting, varieties, etc. The board of directors is excited about my plan to transition the orchard to organic (its mostly there, but not quite), and also to start planting some beneficial understory perennials and shrubs, test out some coppiceable nitrogen fixers inbetween the trees, etc. If nothing else, we can move mulch and talk. There is fruit come harvest time, plus overgrown rootstocks that are going to be composted soon if no one wants them....
is that enough incentive?!?!
call me at home, 503-788-8570 if you have more questions or want to come out and need directions. i can carpool 2 extra people from se pdx if you need a ride.
thanks! karen
